Written Examination

Written examination, will be on Thursday 19.7.2012, 10:00-12:00, Lecture Hall 2, Roemerstr. 164
You will need more than 50 percent of the maximal points from the assignments to be admitted to the exam.
In general, working on the assignments carefully is a good preparation for the exam.

Die aktive Teilnahme an den Übungen wird empfohlen.


Content:

This lecture is part of the intelligent systems track of the master programme "Computer Science". It is open for CS diploma students [B].

The lecture gives an overview over the most prominent aspects of artificial life research from the foundations, including strong and weak artificial life, via the most prominent topics of artificial life to the state of the art and to current applications.

The following topics will be presented and discussed in detail:
Cellular automata, Conway's "Game of Life", mechanisms for structure development and pattern formation, basics of nonlinear systems, Lindenmeyer Systems, evolutionary methods, and genetic algorithms, reinforcement learning, artificial immune systems, adaptive behaviour, self-organising criticality, swarming behaviour, swarm intelligence.


Exercises:

The exercises are designed to intensify the work with the research topics presented within the lecture. You will get weekly paper-and-pencil exercises that shall be worked on in two person groups and completed within one week. Your results to the assignments presentation and discussion of the results of the weekly homework during the exercises; small tasks to be completed using state of the art simulation tools and programms implemented individually.

Successful exercise participation (not graded) is a prerequisite for participating at the written exam (graded) for this module.
